Una Ursprung in Conversation with Sarah Forman


His inherent appreciation for the found object, or objet trouvé, continues to take him to curious paths into and around the city. On collection days, he’ll set out with his backpack, hop on public transportation or paratransit, and arrive at his key destinations—the salvage yards around Gilbertsville, reliable second-hand and thrift stores, long walks along abandoned roads, and car junkyards. Whatever he can fit in his backpack or carry home is fair game.

Hans was a residency artist at Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in 2020 and finally got the opportunity to come back to exhibit his work that was supposed to happen right after his residency. At BABEL, Scherer shows a series of new works ranging from sculpture, painting, relief and collage, upload pre recorded video to facebook live mounted on walls and floors. Each work is highly textured and often inspired by urban and natural landscapes. Collages by Mercyhurst art alumni and Erie resident Larry Walczak, class of 1974, and Will Ursprung, class of 1976, will also be included. Shawn Watrous is a painter and collage artist from San Francisco who currently lives and works in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His work has been exhibited locally and nationally including shows at The Painting Center in New York City, The State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the Mattress Factory Museum, among others.

For this exhibition call, ‘collage’ is understood as both the technique and the resulting work of art in which pieces of paper, photographs, fabric, and other ephemera are arranged and stuck down onto a supporting surface to create an overall work of art. Manuel Ursprung is a German-born, British-based artist with national exposure. He specializes in three-dimensional reliefs made using a quick-setting gypsum plaster. Ursprung creates a new mold for every piece made of either carved dough, wood pieces or plastic objects.

The exhibition features the work of 29 artists from 13 states, including Pittsburgh artist Ron Copeland. We ship internationally via DHL and shipping costs are calculated during checkout. An open-to-the-public artists’ reception will be held Nov. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. The collage idiom can be likened to the improvisation of jazz, and may make a statement about our disposable society. Sources of inspiration for me besides the object itself, have been Primitive art, Celtic, Norse and Native American myth. Also grist for the creative mill are modern aphorisms and metaphors. “To promote, inspire and support the artistic spirit within the community.”
